What is the IELTS Exam?

Firstly, let me give you a brief overview of the IELTS exam. It is an English proficiency test, similar to other language proficiency tests like TOEFL and Duolingo. The IELTS exam has two types of tests - the paper-based test and the computer-based test. I recommend the computer-based test as it is more user-friendly and eliminates the impact of handwriting on your scores.

How to take the IELTS?

The IELTS exam has two types of tests as well - General Training Test and Academic Test. As you're taking the exam for higher education, you need to opt for the Academic Test. The Academic Test consists of four modules - Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Preparation Tips

Now let's move on to the preparation. I prepared for the IELTS exam in just four days, roughly spending 5-6 hours a day. If you're planning to join a coaching center, I suggest you save your money as you can easily find all the necessary resources online. There are many online resources available where you can practice mock tests and learn everything you need to know about the IELTS exam. You can even subscribe to YouTube channels dedicated to IELTS preparation.

One such channel that helped me a lot is 'IELTS Liz'. The channel owner is an IELTS teacher and explains concepts clearly and concisely. I mainly used this channel to prepare for the Listening and Reading modules. I watched their practice question videos and noted down the answers.

For the Listening, Reading, and Writing modules, I recommend that you prepare for individual questions before attempting mock tests. Among the four modules, Listening is the easiest, and I recommend you focus on it as scoring well in this module will help increase your overall band score. Reading is somewhat tricky, but with good time management, you can score well. Writing consists of two tasks, with the second task carrying more weight. It's important to practice well and pay attention to your vocabulary, punctuation, sentence flow, and paragraph structure. Speaking is all about confidence and presentation skills. Practice speaking fluently and without hesitation.

I recommend taking one module each day, but if you have more time, you can take 2-3 days per module. Besides IELTS Liz, there are other online resources available, such as IELTStest.com. The IELTS exam authority will also send you a book after you register for the exam, which you can use to practice.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I hope this article has given you some insights on how to prepare for the IELTS exam. Remember to focus on each module, practice well, and aim for a score of at least six in each module. Good luck with your IELTS exam!
